The Effects of Positive and Negative Ions on our Bodies

The Effects of Positive and Negative Ions on our Bodies

A positive ion is an atom or molecule that has lost one or more electrons due to a high-energy impact. Positive ions are generated by natural forces such as the decay of radioactive minerals, radon gas, forest fires, lightning and ultraviolet rays.
A negative ion is an atom or molecule that has gained one or more extra negatively charged electrons. Negative ions are naturally generated by evaporating water.

The ratio of positive to negative ions is crucial because negative ions can neutralize the harmful effects of positive ions. At the beginning of the 21st Century the ratio of positive ions to negative ions was 2:1 (2 negative ions to every 1 positive ion) however in more recent studies due to environmental hazards (such as pollution) the ratio is more like 1:2 (1 negative ion to very 2 positive ions).

There are different levels of positive and negative ions in different locations around us, for example in offices and industrial areas the level of positive ions has been measured at 1,400 and negative ions at 70, whereas in a forest or near a waterfall positive ions have been measured at only 800 while negative ions are as many as 2,500-5,000.

Positive ions can have many harmful effects on the body, for example they can constrict blood vessels, increase blood pressure, increase blood acidity, weaken bones, decrease nitrogen in urine, make breathing more difficult, increase pulse rate, impair heart function, prolong physical recovery, strain the nervous system and suppress and delay growth.

Negative ions can have many beneficial effects on the body, for example they can dilate blood vessels, stabilize blood pressure, increase blood alkalinity, strengthen bones, increase nitrogen in urine, make breathing easier by stabilizing respiration, decrease pulse rate, enhance heart function, speed physical recovery, calm and relax nerves, and promote healthy growth.

Generally speaking, positive ions are harmful to the human body, while negative ions are beneficial. Ions enter the body through our lungs and through our skin, then travel through the blood and lymphatic systems to cells throughout the body. We can not always chose what sort of environment we spend the majority of time in so some people use air ionizers, eat certain alkaline-producing foods or wear ionic jewellery to surround themselves with negative ions and feel the health benefits to their body.
